The first basic requirement for a child to be baptized is that at least one of his or her parents be a baptized and confirmed member of the Church. There should also be the consent of both parents to baptize the child.

If the child is not an infant but already of school age, it would be good if the child could have a preparation for baptism, for example by attending a Sunday school.

All children who are baptized must have at least one godparent who must be a baptized and confirmed member of the Church. A godparent as well as the parent(s) of the child must live a life in conformity with the teachings of the Church. The duty of a godparent is to ensure that the child is well versed in the fundamentals and practices of Chistian faith, helping the child in its spiritual journey.

Esimene põhinõue lapse ristimiseks on, et vähemalt üks tema vanematest peab olema ristitud ja konfirmeeritud kirikuliige. Lapse ristimiseks peaks võimalusel olema mõlema vanema nõusolek.

Kui tegemist ei ole enam väikelapsega, vaid juba kooliealisega, oleks hea, kui laps saaks ka ise teatava ettevalmistuse ristimiseks, näiteks pühapäevakoolis käies.

Kõigil ristitud lastel peab olema vähemalt üks ristivanem, kes peab olema ristitud ja konfirmeeritud kirikuliige. Ristivanem ja lapse vanem(ad) peavad elama kooskõlas kiriku õpetusega. Ristivanema ülesandeks on saata oma ristilast tema vaimulikul teekonnal, hoolitsedes selle eest, et laps kasvab üles kristlikus usus ja elus.
